Reuters: Bangladesh army refused to suppress protest, sealing PM Hasina's fate
The Bangladesh Army has refused to use force to quell protests and shoot those who break curfew.
The decision was taken immediately after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country amid the unrest, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.
"Waker-uz-Zaman then contacted Hasina's office, conveying to the prime minister that her soldiers would not be able to impose the quarantine she had called for, according to an Indian official briefed on the matter," the publication said, citing two Bangladesh Army officers.
The agency's interlocutors made it clear that the Bangladesh Army was no longer supporting Hasina and it was her fleeing the country that was the last point. The fleeing prime minister's government imposed a curfew after protests left 91 people dead and hundreds injured. The death toll then rose.
