Russia bolsters strategic partnership with Iran amid trade, defence talks

09 September 2024 17:14

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that Russia and Iran would continue cooperation in the most important areas.

He also pointed out that reports on this matter are not always accurate, Caliber.Az informs via Russian media.

“We have seen this report. Such information does not always reflect reality,” said the Kremlin representative, commenting on an article by The Wall Street Journal about the alleged delivery of short-range missiles from Iran to Russia.

“Iran is a key partner for us; we are strengthening our trade and economic ties, broadening collaboration and dialogue in every possible area, including the most delicate ones, and we will continue this in the best interests of both our nations,” Peskov emphasised.

Meanwhile, commenting on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s “peace plan” over conflict in Ukraine, Peskov stated that the Kremlin is exploring all potential solutions to address the situation in Ukraine. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to review this “plan”.

Peskov also noted that he was unfamiliar with the specifics of the plan, having only heard about it through media reports.

"We are aware of nothing beyond what has been reported in the press. It seems a plan is in the works, but we have no information on its specifics. While we are not ruling out any proposals in advance, we need to fully understand what this one entails," the Kremlin spokesperson added.

Notably, Scholz highlighted the pressing need to resolve Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, stating that both he and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are aligned on the necessity of involving Russia in future peace talks.

As the conflict enters its third year, Kyiv has expressed its intention to invite a Russian representative to the second conference to propose a peace plan, which will be based on Zelenskyy's formula and international collaboration.

"There will undoubtedly be another peace conference, and the president and I agree that Russia must be part of it," Scholz said in an interview with Germany's ZDF channel.

He also underscored the need to expedite efforts to end the conflict, stating: "I believe that now is the time to discuss how we can exit this war situation more swiftly than current expectations suggest."
