Turkish leader calls for urgent reform of UN Security Council
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced in his message to UN Secretary-General António Guterres that the UN Security Council requires urgent and radical reform.
"The structure of the UN Security Council, which falls short of fulfilling its duties in ensuring global peace and security, must be radically changed. We will continue supporting all allies who strive for a just international system and a Security Council that meets contemporary conditions," Caliber.Az reports citing the Russian media.
President Erdogan has previously emphasised the need for reforming the UN system, repeatedly stating that "the world is more than five," referring to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, the US, China, the UK, and France) having veto power and can block any decision.
The Turkish leader’s foundational arguments for the reform of the UN are detailed in his book, "A Fairer World is Possible," published in September 2021. In the book, he highlights such issues in global politics as the migration crisis, international terrorism, Islamophobia, discrimination, and double standards.
The president noted that Türkiye will continue making efforts to reform the UN "until such a system is established where strength is aligned with justice, rather than the current reality where might makes right."
