UN: Azerbaijan becomes regional leader in promoting AI

05 June 2025 11:33

Azerbaijan has become a regional leader in promoting artificial intelligence (AI) for the benefit of society and developing digital infrastructure.

The remarks were voiced by Executive Director of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Natalia Bayona, during the 71st session of the UNWTO Regional Commission for Europe, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“Azerbaijan has become a regional leader in promoting artificial intelligence for the benefit of society and in developing digital infrastructure. I congratulate the country on this ambitious position. The same energy and positivity that we see here can be felt throughout Europe,” said the UN representative.

According to her, Baku has demonstrated significant progress over the last six years.

“For me, it is a special pleasure to be once again in this historic, vibrant, and lively city. The unique combination of modernity and traditions makes Baku truly special. I always say that tourism is the most humane of all economic sectors. It has the biggest heart and offers vast opportunities for young people, women — and ultimately for everyone. Azerbaijan only strengthens my confidence in this. It is a country that proudly preserves and develops its traditions and cultural heritage,” Bayona added.

She noted that artificial intelligence has become an integral part of reality, but stressed that technology cannot replace the human factor in tourism.

“Azerbaijan is looking to the future. 2.3 million people, or 23% of the country’s population, are aged between 14 and 29. It is at this stage of life that it is important to show young people the opportunities that tourism opens up — and what they can contribute to this sector. The literacy rate in the country is 100%. And I am particularly pleased to see that the youth share my passion for entrepreneurship and innovation,” Bayona emphasised.
