UN chief calls for respect of diplomatic immunity in Syria

09 December 2024 10:21

On December 8, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has highlighted the importance of upholding international law, particularly the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel in Syria.

He called for calm and urged all parties to avoid violence during this sensitive period, while ensuring that the rights of all Syrians are protected without distinction, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Addressing the ongoing crisis, Guterres has highlighted the importance of international support to ensure a political transition that is inclusive, comprehensive, and in line with the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.

He emphasized that Syria now stands at a pivotal juncture, with the potential to secure a peaceful and stable future following 14 years of devastating conflict.

Guterres underscored that Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity must be restored to pave the way for lasting peace.

“The future of Syria is a matter for the Syrians to determine, and my Special Envoy will be working with them towards that end,” he said, stressing the critical role of dialogue and diplomatic efforts in shaping the country’s future.

In addition to addressing the immediate political transition, Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to honouring the memory of all those who have suffered as a result of the prolonged conflict.

“We remain dedicated to helping Syrians build a nation founded on justice, freedom, reconciliation, and prosperity,” he said. “This is the path to sustainable peace in Syria.”

To recall, clashes reignited between Assad regime forces and anti-regime groups in rural areas west of Aleppo, one of Syria’s major northern cities on November 27. Within days, opposition forces launched a swift and strategic offensive, capturing key towns and advancing toward Damascus, the Syrian capital. This rapid progression—fuelled by support from defecting military units—signifies a turning point in the 13-year-long civil war.

The collapse of the Assad regime, as witnessed in recent weeks, underscores both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Syria. Guterres acknowledged that while much work remains to ensure a smooth and orderly political transition and the rebuilding of institutions, this historic moment represents a unique chance to achieve peace and stability.

As international attention focuses on the path forward for Syria, the UN and its partners are poised to support efforts that will allow Syrians to build a sustainable, peaceful, and democratic future.
