US leader may invite Ukraine to NATO if Democratic Party's candidate wins
US President Joe Biden may initiate Ukraine's NATO membership if Democratic Party's candidate Kamala Harris wins the presidential election.
The US has no significant objections to inviting Ukraine to join the alliance. However, this issue has sparked considerable disagreements among other Western allies of Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Biden may facilitate Ukraine's accession to the NATO if Harris wins. To advance this initiative, the US leader may use the transition period after the elections in early November and the inauguration in January.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the US position on Ukraine's NATO membership has improved, but skepticism remains in Germany. President made this statement during a TV show.
Following his visits to the UK, France, Italy, and Germany, the president stated that some countries still wish to maintain the relations with Russia.
He noted that the issue of providing long-range weapons remains contentious with Germany, describing it as "the most sensitive topic" for Berlin.
"We have talked about Ukraine's future specifically within NATO. The German position is very important, as skepticism still exists among the Germans. We are closer to NATO with the US than ever before," Zelenskyy added.
Ukraine views NATO membership as the most reliable guarantee of protection against potential further attack from Russia.
