EU plans new sanctions against Russia over ties to North Korea
The European Commission has revealed plans to intensify efforts to implement a 17th sanctions package against Russia due to its military cooperation with North Korea.
European Commission spokesperson Paola Pinyu emphasised that the European Commission would not tolerate military ties between Russia and North Korea, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
Anita Hipper, another representative of the Commission, confirmed that the EU would respond with sanctions designed to further weaken Russia.
The Commission indicated that it would take additional measures to move forward with the 17th sanctions package.
Earlier, North Korea confirmed that it had sent troops to fight for Russia in Ukraine, a move authorised by Kim Jong Un. This unprecedented deployment included thousands of troops, artillery ammunition, and missiles, bolstering Russia's position in the Kursk region.
The North's support has strengthened ties between the two nations, both economically and politically isolated. Russia acknowledged the deployment over the weekend, with President Putin thanking North Korea for its assistance.
North Korea described the alliance as a "firm militant friendship," with Kim praising the bravery of the troops. The U.S. condemned the deployment, stating it violated U.N. resolutions, while South Korea condemned the act as "inhumane and immoral." Kyiv denied claims of Russian territorial gains, asserting that Ukrainian forces remain active in parts of the region.
