Hungary to support diesel car owners amid rising fuel prices

11 September 2026 20:46

The Hungarian government has introduced a monthly compensation payment of around €14 for owners of diesel-powered cars with engines of up to 150 horsepower.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar said in a post on X that the measure will remain in effect until the end of the year, Caliber.Az reports.

“We will provide direct and effective support to the owners of 1 million diesel-powered cars and their families. On average, a family refuels its car once a month. Due to rising global prices, the difference between the previously regulated price and the market price is around 5,000 forints (€13.77) per refuelling. The government will compensate for this difference every month,” Magyar wrote.

According to him, by the end of December, vehicle owners will receive total compensation of 20,000 forints (€55).

The benefit will also apply to farmers and self-employed individuals, provided the vehicle is registered in their name.
