Chief spokesperson: EU may delay final decision on banning Russian LNG
The European Commission could once again delay its decision to ban Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other fossil fuels from the EU market, according to Paula Pinho, EC Chief Spokesperson.
Speaking at a briefing in Brussels on April 28, 2025, Pinho stated that the Commission is still working on the roadmap for the decision, which is expected to be finalised by May 6, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
However, she noted that the EU often faces challenges in sticking to planned schedules, with adjustments made based on the progress of internal work.
"We are still aiming to prepare the roadmap by May 6, but as we know, there are often deviations from what we plan. We are adapting to how the process is evolving internally. This has nothing to do with the member states; the document preparation is being led exclusively by the Commission," Pinho said, addressing reporters' questions regarding disagreements with some EU member states that oppose the ban on Russian LNG imports.
The proposal, which aims to implement a phased ban on all fossil fuels from Russia, including LNG, was initially set for release in early March. However, it has already been postponed to May 6. This deadline, however, might also be pushed back due to ongoing discontent among several EU countries.
