Media: Liberal Party wins Canadian parliamentary election
The ruling Liberal Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, is winning the snap parliamentary elections.
At the moment, the Liberals are securing 142 out of 343 seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of Parliament, Caliber.Az reports, citing Canadian news channel CTV News.
Their closest rivals, the Conservative Party of Canada, have 104 seats. The Bloc Québécois is in third place with 21 seats, followed by the New Democratic Party with 5 seats. Other political forces have so far failed to overcome the threshold to enter Parliament.
The key question now is whether the Liberals will be able to secure 172 seats to form a majority government. CTV experts suggest that the Liberals may ultimately win between 152 and 180 seats, while the Conservatives are projected to claim between 119 and 144 seats.
On April 28, Canada is holding its 45th election for the House of Commons. The leader of the party that wins will become the country’s new prime minister.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Canada should join the United States, noting that Canada would be "much better off" as the 51st U.S. state.
