Canada slams Iranian military threats against journalists
Canada has strongly condemned threats issued by the Islamic Republic of Iran against journalists following recent remarks by a senior Iranian military spokesman targeting Persian-language media outlets based outside the country.
Responding to Iran International, Canada’s Foreign Ministry said Ottawa “strongly condemns threats by the Iranian regime against journalists, both inside and outside Iran.”
The ministry stressed that Canada firmly supports the right of media organizations to operate in an environment free from intimidation and harassment by government authorities.
The statement came after Abolfazl Shekarchi, a senior spokesman for Iran’s armed forces, reportedly said that journalists working for Persian-language media outlets abroad could be considered military targets.
