Bloomberg: Electricity prices fall to lowest level since June in Germany

Electricity prices in Germany have dropped 53% to €42.14 per megawatt-hour, the lowest level since June, Bloomberg reports.

The report said this was driven by strong winds that triggered a surge in power generation from wind farms.

The agency noted that under favourable weather conditions, renewable energy sources in Germany can provide abundant and cheap electricity. However, prices can rise sharply when renewable generation declines and the country has to rely more heavily on fossil-fuel power plants and imports.

Meanwhile, electricity in neighbouring France costs twice as much as nuclear power generation in the country has declined.

The main culprit is the heat, which has raised water temperatures in rivers used to cool nuclear reactors.

In addition, the warmer conditions have led to an increase in jellyfish populations, with jellyfish clogging the pumping systems of nuclear power plants.

Spain, which has also relied heavily on renewable energy, has faced a surplus of electricity. In 2025, the country installed so many solar power plants that they oversupplied the grid, pushing prices significantly below zero during peak hours.
