Zangezur corridor set to multiply Azerbaijan’s transit capacity, says railway official
The Zangezur corridor could significantly increase freight flows through Azerbaijan and strengthen the country’s role as a regional transit hub, a senior railway official has said.
Speaking at the 2nd Caspian International Transport, Transit and Logistics Forum in Baku, Emil Mammadov, adviser to the chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, said the planned corridor would become a key component of the broader Middle Corridor trade route linking Europe and Asia, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He said the new transport link would substantially expand Azerbaijan’s transit and logistics capacity and enable a multiple increase in cargo volumes passing through the country.
“The Zangezur corridor is an important connecting link that will significantly expand the country’s transit and transport-logistics capabilities. Its opening will allow freight volumes through Azerbaijan to increase several times, while also significantly enhancing the capacity of the Middle Corridor,” Mammadov said.
According to earlier estimates, freight traffic along the Zangezur corridor is projected to reach around 15 million tonnes annually once fully operational.
