Russian spokeswoman: Brussels stokes controversy between Baku, Yerevan

    REGION  30 March 2023 - 18:49

Statements by the head of the mission Markus Ritter confirm the destructiveness of EU's intentions and actions in the region. Moreover, Brussels is obviously not interested in trust and rapprochement of positions between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Sputnik Armenia reports that Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said this at a briefing on March 30.

Earlier, Ritter in an interview with Deutsche Welle, speaking about the mission's activities, said that "they cannot interfere, they only have binoculars and cameras at their disposal." According to him, they are forbidden access to Azerbaijani territory, so they cannot detect, for example, the movement of troops in preparation for another attack.

"It is very important to hear not those who have never mediated a settlement, who have never added value, who have never achieved practical results. It is important to hear from Yerevan and Baku, this is a key story in this whole problem, we need to hear, listen and act in the interests of the two countries," Zakharova said.

According to her, Moscow understands perfectly well that there are different points of view, sometimes diametrically opposite in the two countries, that there are periods of extreme complication and aggravation. At the same time the Russian side considers that the parties can come to an agreement, and the main thing is to create the appropriate atmosphere, basis, basis for such agreements and understandings and to facilitate this understanding and not vice versa.

"Brussels with its inept, irrepressible, unprofessional, ill-conceived, dishonest activity foments the contradiction between Baku and Yerevan," Zakharova concluded.

February 20, a new European mission of 100 people with a two-year mandate was deployed to Armenia. And although the EU mission is named civilian, 50 of its members are armed gendarmes. The mission's goal is to contribute to stability in the border regions of Armenia, build confidence on the ground and provide an environment conducive to efforts to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
