Algerian official: Türkiye showed us what democracy should be like

05 June 2023 16:45

Türkiye taught the world "a lesson of democracy" during the May elections, the chairman of the Algerian Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, who was in Ankara to attend President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's inauguration ceremony, told Anadolu.

He said the whole world, in particular Algeria and its people, had watched the elections in Türkiye closely.

"Türkiye showed us what democracy should be like. The turnout was around 90 per cent, a clear message to those who doubt the democratic maturity of Turkish society," Goudjil stressed.

The head of the Council of the Nation called the Turkish elections a "historic event" in which the Turkish people reaffirmed their trust in Erdogan.

He said relations between Ankara and Algeria have a solid foundation: "There is no doubt that relations will expand, including at the international level".

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won Türkiye’s presidential election, defeating opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the May 28 runoff vote and stretching his rule into a third decade.

With 99.43% of the votes counted, preliminary official results announced by Türkiye’s Supreme Election Council (YSK)  showed Erdogan winning with 52.14 per cent of the votes. Kilicdaroglu received 47.86 per cent.
