German FM reaffirms Ukraine’s irreversible path to NATO membership

Germany's newly appointed Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has declared that Ukraine’s path toward NATO membership is "irreversible," reaffirming Berlin's commitment to Kyiv’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

In an interview with local media, Wadephul emphasized that all NATO member states had collectively agreed on Ukraine’s future within the alliance, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.

“In NATO, everyone jointly agreed that Ukraine is on the path to joining the defence alliance and that this path is irreversible. Germany stands by this decision,” he stated.

Wadephul also confirmed that Ukraine continues to pursue membership in both the European Union and NATO, and reiterated that Germany remains fully supportive of these aspirations.

His remarks come amid renewed discussion of Western support for Ukraine’s long-term security architecture. During the Trump administration, US officials presented Ukraine with a one-page document in Paris that was framed as a final proposal for a peaceful settlement. The proposal reportedly included a condition that Ukraine would forgo future NATO membership—a stance that diverges sharply from current transatlantic consensus.

Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed optimism that the United States might reconsider its position on Ukraine’s accession to NATO. Speaking publicly, she underscored the importance of a united Western approach and voiced support for Ukraine’s integration into the alliance.

The reaffirmation from Berlin marks a continued effort by European leaders to underscore NATO’s commitment to Ukraine amid persistent Russian aggression and evolving international negotiations over the country’s future security arrangements.
