ANCA on warpath with Washington Armenia's failure at UNSC meeting
The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has criticised the US authorities. And it is clear why: the Americans did not justify the hopes of the global Armenian community - they did not speak out against Azerbaijan in the UN Security Council and were sympathetic to the explanations of Baku's representative on the situation in the Garabagh region.
Moreover, the United States recommended that the sides reach a compromise on additional routes for the delivery of humanitarian goods. US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield confirmed that more than 700 Garabagh Armenians in need of medical assistance were transported along the Lachin road.
Thus, it can be stated that the US attitude to the current Garabagh problem was an unexpected and rather serious blow to the plans of the world Armenian community concerning the status of the region and other issues.
It should be noted that Armenia just suffered a stunning diplomatic defeat at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, which is currently chaired by the United States. As always, slandering Azerbaijan, the Armenian leadership went as far as to almost demand sanctions against Baku at the level of this organisation.
At the very least, it insisted on a general condemnation with an instruction to immediately stop the "blockade" of Garabagh. From the beginning it was clear that the Armenians were betting on the United States and France, expecting that the American representatives at the UN would be persuaded to side with them by congressmen paid by the diaspora, who on the eve of the meeting wrote a letter to the US Ambassador to the UN, urging her, together with all members of the UN Security Council, to put pressure on the Azerbaijani government.
But all their efforts went in vain - no resolution or condemnation followed. And then ANCA decided to say its word. The Armenian Committee laid the blame for its failure in the Security Council on the United States, or more precisely, its American patrons, publishing the following note:
"The United States should have been ahead of the curve in leading the UN Security Council and the broader international community to overcome Azerbaijan's genocidal blockade of 120,000 indigenous Armenians of Artsakh. A failure of leadership."
By the way, the Armenian National Committee of America has become one of the most militant among other diaspora structures, as it often makes accusations against the policies of the United States. Of course, in the context of Azerbaijan and Türkiye. For example, in 2011 it was ANCA that launched a powerful campaign against the final approval of Matthew Bryza as US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, as he was notable for his objective position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
At the same time, Armenian media reported that ANCA urged voters to send emails to senators demanding that they not approve Bryza for the post, seeing him as a threat to push their interests in the region.
It is also a fact that in 2015, ANCA and Dashnaktsutyun made great efforts to get Washington to cancel military aid to Baku, and a year later, in 2016, they also called on the US to make public the intelligence "about Azerbaijan's attack on “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic".
Moreover, in October 2020, ANCA demanded that the US authorities impose financial sanctions against Azerbaijan and Türkiye - as the Armenian media pointed out at the time, for "war crimes against civilians in Armenia and Artsakh". But all the efforts of the aggressive Armenian diaspora structures were in vain - Washington simply ignored their appeals.
Later, as early as April 2022, ANCA said it would not stop working with Congress to get Washington to stop military aid to Baku.
"We will continue to work with the House of Representatives and the Senate to ensure that we guarantee a complete withdrawal of US funding for military assistance to Azerbaijan, which, along with Türkiye, is pursuing genocidal policies," ANCA said, arguing that "the people of Artsakh continue to face severe hardship due to both the deadly 44-day war instigated by Azerbaijani forces in 2020 and their provocations against innocent civilians.”
And in September 2022, ANCA broke the news that the US was considering selling American weapons to Armenia, ostensibly to help defend itself against Azerbaijan.
However, Armenia is still waiting for this American assistance, and the probability that it will receive it is extremely low. Firstly, the United States is now actively promoting the peace agenda in the negotiations between Baku and Yerevan on its platform and is extremely interested in a comprehensive peace agreement being signed in the American negotiating track, rather than in Moscow or even Brussels. Therefore, no matter how much ANCA snarls at the United States, it will not see the desired results.
Secondly, considering itself responsible for the world order, Washington would certainly not turn a blind eye to Azerbaijan's "genocidal policy", moreover, in a region that is of interest to it, and therefore it did not see any international or humanitarian violations in Azerbaijan's actions. The White House is surely aware of the realities of the region, and if the situation in Garabagh was as the Armenian side describes it, the US would act quite differently.
Therefore, no matter how hard Armenian figures in Yerevan and the diaspora try, they will not be able to turn the United States against Azerbaijan, which is perceived by the White House as a reliable strategic partner in the South Caucasus. And it is all the more vain to turn Washington against Türkiye, which is a strategic partner and NATO ally of the United States.
Thirdly, Armenia can only be sympathised with, as it not only lost the war with Azerbaijan outright but is doomed to suffer ideological and diplomatic defeat on international platforms because it is a country that does not follow international law in the hope of clever propaganda, a rich diaspora and a bribed lobby.
