Azerbaijan marks momentous milestone with departure of Russian peacekeepers from Karabakh New chapter in Baku-Moscow ties

15 May 2024 17:15

Today, Azerbaijan witnessed a milestone - the solemn send-off of Russian peacekeepers from Karabakh. This significant step, resulting from agreements between the leaders of both countries, signals a new chapter in Azerbaijan-Russia relations. The withdrawal of foreign military forces from Azerbaijani territory underscores the importance of this event in strengthening the country's sovereignty and independence, paving the way for a peaceful and stable future.

The presence of Russian peacekeepers in the Karabakh region has always elicited mixed reactions in Azerbaijani society. Caliber.Az has dedicated multiple articles to various aspects of the Russian peacekeepers' mission, shedding light on both its positive and negative aspects. While the peacekeepers undoubtedly played a role in stabilizing the situation after the Second Karabakh War, some of their actions (and at times, inaction) prompted ambiguous assessments within society. However, with the completion of their mission, these concerns are now relegated to the past.

The final withdrawal of the Russian peacekeepers serves as vivid evidence that Azerbaijan and Russia are prepared to foster their relations based on principles of equality and mutual respect. The absence of foreign military forces on Azerbaijani territory, as previously mentioned, underscores the sovereignty and independence of the nation, creating favorable conditions for a mutually beneficial partnership. This step not only enhances trust between the two states but also facilitates the development of deeper and more multifaceted ties founded on shared interests and respect for sovereignty.

An important aspect of this event is the debunking of myths propagated by Western-sponsored media. The so-called "media mafia" has frequently asserted that Russian troops would remain in Azerbaijan indefinitely, intentionally misleading the public. In this context, one can humorously recall the statement made by journalist Sevinj Osmangizi, residing in the United States and actively opposing Azerbaijan, who pledged to commend the "victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief" if Russian peacekeepers were withdrawn from the country. Now, as Russian peacekeepers depart Karabakh entirely, it is particularly amusing to reflect on the prognostications of these purported experts.

Today's event is not just a symbolic act, but an important step towards a prosperous and peaceful future of the region. Azerbaijan, demonstrating its readiness for constructive dialogue and cooperation, is strengthening its position in the international arena. The departure of the Russian peacekeepers marks an important stage in the development of the region, emphasizing the desire for stability and peace. Thus, Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its sovereignty, demonstrating to the world its ability to ensure security and stability on its own. The new chapter in relations with Russia, devoid of a military element, opens the way to cooperation and mutual understanding, which will create a solid foundation for a peaceful and prosperous future.

Azerbaijan shows its readiness for constructive dialogue and active interaction in the international arena. The rejection of the presence of foreign military forces confirms Azerbaijan's commitment to the principles of independence and sovereignty. This decision contributes to the formation of more stable and mutually beneficial relations with neighboring countries and the world community as a whole.

Strengthening internal stability and foreign policy based on mutual respect and cooperation provides the country with prospects for long-term development and prosperity. Interaction with Russia in the new conditions creates opportunities for economic growth, cultural exchange and political dialogue, which will ultimately benefit all parties.

And most importantly, today Azerbaijan has permanently closed the Karabakh issue, including gaining full sovereign control over the liberated region.
