Baku Initiative Group to hold anti-colonialism conference at UN headquarters

The Baku Initiative Group's (BIG) regular conference dedicated to the fight against colonialism will be held on June 20 at the UN headquarters in New York.

The conference will be held within the framework of the annual meeting of the special committee - C24 - established in connection with the implementation of the UN Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonised Countries and Peoples, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The conference, entitled "Towards Independence and Fundamental Freedoms: The Role of the C24 Committee in Ending Colonialism" will be attended by officials from the French and Dutch colonised territories, as well as representatives from Corsica, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Maohi Nui (French Polynesia), Kanaka (New Caledonia), as well as Saint Martin, Bonaire, and more than 40 officials, independence leaders, decolonisation experts, parliamentarians and researchers from the United States, France, Brazil, the Union of Gambian Islands and the Netherlands.

Unlike the international conferences organised by the Baku Initiative Group previously, this event will be the first time that representatives from St. Maarten and Bonaire, which are colonies of the Netherlands, will participate and speak.

At the conference, the Foreign Minister of New Caledonia will brief the world community on recent developments in his country, including the atrocities committed by the French Government against the Kanak people.
