Western Azerbaijan Community: Armenia still struggles to abandon “Miatsum” policy

16 September 2026 12:51

The Western Azerbaijan Community has stated that the ongoing reaction in Armenia to foreign diplomats’ recent visit to Azerbaijan’s liberated territories shows that Armenian society still has serious reservations about abandoning the notorious “Miatsum” policy, recognising Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and embracing peaceful coexistence with its neighbour.

The community described the reaction as an “unfounded campaign” that undermines the peace and normalisation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, adding that the “Real Armenia” concept put forward by the Armenian authorities was, in practice, facing a serious crisis.

It stressed that the “toxic ideology” of “Miatsum” had pushed Armenia toward policies that led to the deportation of Western Azerbaijanis from Armenia, the occupation of Azerbaijani territories and the deliberate destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage, including mosques.

“What consequences this policy has brought to the Armenian state and the Armenian people are well known to everyone,” the statement added.

The community called on Armenian society “not to repeat the mistakes of the past, to stop attempts to interfere in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs, to fully recognise Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to refrain from provocations that cause justified discontent in Azerbaijan.”
