16 September 2026 18:08

The Pan-African Parliament and the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM PN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding during a meeting between Azerbaijani Speaker Sahiba Gafarova and a delegation led by Pan-African Parliament President Fateh Boutbig.

The Press Office of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament) said Gafarova noted that the memorandum would be an important step towards further developing cooperation between the two parliamentary platforms, Caliber.Az reports.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on developing cooperation between the Pan-African Parliament and Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, as well as between the NAM Parliamentary Network, and discussed other issues.

Gafarova noted that the Milli Majlis attaches particular importance to developing relations with African parliaments. In this context, she stressed the significance of parliamentary diplomacy, the continued expansion of inter-parliamentary ties and the strengthening of political dialogue.

Boutbig, in turn, thanked the Azerbaijani side for its hospitality and noted that Azerbaijan was the first country outside Africa he had visited since being elected to his current position. He underlined the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy and expressed the organisation's readiness to co-operate with national parliaments and international parliamentary organisations.

Gafarova said the memorandum represented a significant step in the continued development of co-operation between the two parliamentary platforms.
