Armenia hopes to sign peace treaty without responding to Azerbaijan's proposals
    Statement by Armenian FM

    REGION  20 June 2024 - 17:30

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has said that the foreign ministry has not received a response from Azerbaijan on the proposals sent for a peace treaty yet.

Mirzoyan made these remarks at a joint briefing with his Lithuanian colleague Gabrielius Landsbergis in Vilnius, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.

“Yerevan has sent constructive proposals to the Azerbaijani side and is ready to conclude an agreement within a month, but, unfortunately, has not received a response from Baku yet,” the minister said.

He noted that he had discussed the issues of restoring the routes with his Lithuanian colleague.

Mirzoyan noted that he discussed the issues of international and regional security with his Lithuanian colleague, saying that Armenia and Azerbaijan began delimitation in accordance with the Almaty Declaration of 1991.

The Armenian foreign minister said that Armenia also highly appreciates the statement of Landsbergis made after the decision on delimitation reached in April. It is very important to continue this process by mutually confirming the territorial integrity of the countries.

Mirzoyan said that this is necessary to clarify the border issues and to prevent provocations in the future.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that several issues still remain open in the process of normalising the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations.

President Aliyev made these remarks at a meeting with the TURKPA Secretary General and the heads of parliaments of the member states of the Organisation of Turkic States on June 6.

“One of them is the constitution of Armenia, which contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Secondly, it is necessary to put an end to Armenia’s unfounded territorial claims against Azerbaijan and Türkiye. Of course, we have already proposed this to the Armenian side for Azerbaijan and Armenia together to make an appeal to the OSCE to abolish the Minsk Group. There is no need for it, it is not operating now. We will not allow it to operate de facto. As for de jure, legally it must be abolished, and this will show whether Armenia is sincere or not. If Armenia chooses to preserve the Minsk Group, it means that Armenia still has territorial claims against Azerbaijan,” the Azerbaijani President said.
