COP29 presidency team hosts events to tackle key climate agenda issues

26 July 2024 20:03

The COP29 presidency team is conducting on-site events this week to address key climate agenda issues.

Workshops in Malawi, East Africa and Türkiye focus on the preparation of new Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) by UN Climate Convention member countries, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.

These reports are crucial for the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled for November.

Moreover, an on-site meeting of negotiating groups is scheduled in Azerbaijan’s Shamakhi city on July 26-27, focusing on climate finance, which is a central issue for COP29. Expert discussions will continue through September to finalize the conference agenda.

According to the COP presidency programme, high-level meetings will occur in September, including the "Fifth Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" in Rio de Janeiro, hosted by Brazil (chairing both the G20 and COP30). This event will be attended by the presidents of COP29, COP28, and other key officials.

The COP Presidencies Troika – consisting of the UAE (COP28), Azerbaijan (COP29), and Brazil (COP30) – will convene at the UN General Assembly in New York in late September. Subsequently, ministers from these countries will participate in the Joint Ministerial Conference on Climate and Finance of the G20.

These preparatory events lead up to COP29, which will take place in Baku from November 11-22.

To recap, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
