bp achieves first-ever pressure coring acquisition in Caspian Sea Enhancing oil recovery insights
bp has successfully completed its inaugural pressure coring acquisition in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field, marking a groundbreaking achievement not only for the Caspian region but also across bp’s global operations.
Utilizing innovative pressure coring technology, this operation aims to obtain core samples under in-situ reservoir conditions, significantly reducing fluid loss and core damage, Caliber.Az reports via the company.
The core samples collected will undergo a series of laboratory tests to refine understanding of residual oil saturation in the ACG Balakhany reservoir under water flood conditions. This critical data will inform the development of enhanced oil recovery methods and improve the planning and predictability of future reservoir development options.
Conducted in the Balakhany VIII formation via a newly established well on West Azeri, the operation successfully recovered four fully pressurized core samples, capturing and preserving all fluids in their natural state. These samples, accompanied by on-site analytical data, have been dispatched to a laboratory for further evaluation.
The insights gained from this core and fluid data are anticipated to deepen bp's subsurface understanding, enabling the company to adopt the most effective resource development strategies moving forward.
