"Iron domes" not to save Ukraine from Putin's missiles - Israeli expert
Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system cannot be effective enough in Ukraine. To protect against enemy missiles, our country would have enough existing means, if there were more of them.
This opinion was expressed by Israeli military expert David Gendelman in an exclusive commentary of OBOZREVATEL. "In itself, for the conditions for which it was created, the Iron Dome is quite effective, but Ukraine has a very large territory," he said.
As the expert explained, the range of one such Israeli complex is up to 70 kilometers. "In order to block large areas, there should be a lot of such complexes. Now in Israel itself there are only 10 operationally ready batteries."
Thus, "for this to have a significant effect, there should be more of these complexes in Ukraine than in Israel. In the real quantities in which it can be delivered to Ukraine, this will not solve Ukrainian problems," Gendelman assured.
Answering the question why Israel does not provide military assistance to Ukraine, he recalled that this country is in fact constantly at war. "Israel is in the process of constant escalation, constant tension. It is constantly fighting. Therefore, in this situation, the Israeli leadership considers it unwise to open additional fronts."
Commenting on the appeal of Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgeny Korniychuk to sell the "Iron Dome" to our country, Gendelman noted that this statement was aimed at drawing attention to the problem.
At the same time, the expert assured that even the missile defense systems available to Ukraine, for example, the S-300 or Buk, could cope with the task of defense if they were available in large quantities.
“Perhaps, those missile defense systems, S-300, Buk, and so on, which are there, if there were simply more of them, would be enough. You need not so much technological breakthroughs as quantity. As with all other weapons,” he stressed.
