Syrian forces regain control of Ashrafiyat Sahnaya amid deadly clashes

01 May 2025 16:11

Syrian security forces have regained full control over the flashpoint town of Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, southwest of Damascus, following two days of intense clashes that left at least 75 people injured and claimed the lives of several civilians and General Security personnel.

According to Hussam Al-Tahan, head of security in Syria’s Damascus countryside, the military and security presence has now been restored across all neighbourhoods in the town in an effort to stabilise the situation and protect civilians, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media sources.

State television confirmed that forces have been deployed at all major entry and exit points to prevent renewed violence.

In an effort to ease tensions, local dignitaries and religious leaders from the Druze community met with the governors of Damascus Countryside, Sweida, and Quneitra. Syria’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Osama Abdul Karim Al-Rifai, urged citizens to reject sectarian divisions.

“Any act of revenge or retaliation is unjust,” the Mufti said in a televised address on April 30. "Syrian blood is sacred. Do not listen to calls for revenge – extinguishing this strife will save lives."

The Interior Ministry stated that the escalation began when armed militants launched coordinated assaults on several General Security checkpoints, using light weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. Five security officers were killed, and several others wounded.

Authorities continue to urge residents to remain indoors and comply with curfew measures as the situation evolves.
