Russia boosts gas exports to Europe via TurkStream in early 2025

01 May 2025 21:33

Russia increased its natural gas exports to Europe through the TurkStream pipeline in early 2025.

Between January and April, gas deliveries via TurkStream rose by 13 per cent compared to the same period last year, reaching 5.76 billion cubic metres, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

The pipeline, which runs from Russia to Türkiye and onward to southern and southeastern Europe, remains a key route for Russian energy exports amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Despite the overall growth, April saw a month-on-month decline.

Russian gas exports through TurkStream fell by 11 per cent compared to March 2025, totaling 1.25 billion cubic metres. However, that figure still marks a 2 per cent increase over April 2024, suggesting year-over-year demand remains stable. Slovakia has successfully prompted the EU to reopen discussions on resuming Russian gas transit through Ukraine.

The European Council has approved Slovakia’s request to address the issue at the EU level. Talks are currently underway to explore potential mechanisms for restoring gas deliveries from Russia through Ukrainian territory to Slovakia and other EU countries. Russian gas transit via Ukraine was halted on January 1, 2025, after Kyiv officially declined to extend its transit agreement with Moscow. The contract, which had governed the flow of natural gas to Europe, expired on December 31, 2024.
