Massive blaze at Tbilisi market contained, no casualties reported VIDEO/UPDATED
A strong fire that broke out early in the morning of April 30 at the market near the "Station Square" metro station in Tbilisi has been extinguished, as announced by Levan Museliani, the head of the Main Department of Fire and Rescue Services.
Around 30 fire trucks and personnel were involved in extinguishing the fire, which started at around 6 a.m. According to eyewitnesses, the fire began in a shoe store on the second floor, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
"Thanks to the timely response of the firefighters, the fire was localised and extinguished. The fire is now out, and smoldering hotspots are being processed," Museliani stated.
The fire covered approximately 15,000 square metres, he added.
Work to extinguish the remaining smoldering spots is still ongoing. The cause of the fire is not yet known, and there have been no reports of casualties.
