Fire breaks out at Russian rocket engine plant in Perm PHOTO / VIDEO / UPDATED

A fire broke out on Wednesday, September 2, at the Proton-PM rocket engine manufacturing plant in Perm, which produces engines for Russia’s Proton and Angara space launch vehicles, news portal 59.ru reported.

The fire occurred at the facility in the Novye Lyady district. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said a workshop was burning and that the blaze had spread across an area of 2,100 square meters.

More than 80 emergency personnel and 28 pieces of equipment were deployed to extinguish the fire. No casualties have been reported, while the cause of the blaze remains unknown.

Proton-PM is part of the state-owned Roscosmos corporation and, according to Roscosmos, is one of Russia’s largest enterprises in the rocket and space industry. The company specialises in the production of liquid-propellant rocket engines.

Founded in 1958, the plant has manufactured more than 3,000 such engines for Proton launch vehicles. In February 2025, a new building covering more than 44,000 square meters was opened at the Novye Lyady site to support serial production of RD-191 engines for the Angara launch vehicle.

The company also manufactures components for aircraft engines and participates in the production of Ural-series gas-turbine power plants used at facilities across Russia’s fuel and energy sector.
