Rosatom CEO, IAEA chief to address Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant concerns

02 September 2026 12:57

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi will hold their next consultations on September 14, with the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) set to top the agenda.

Likhachev noted that the sides will discuss restoring the plant’s external power supply, as the facility has been relying on internal power generated by diesel generators since August 20. They will also address replenishing fuel supplies for the diesel generators and reducing military activity in the area around the ZNPP, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

“We will discuss all three issues with Grossi. We are ready to agree to ceasefire arrangements to restore external power supplies. We are asking the IAEA to provide patronage and for agency personnel to be physically present while the tankers carrying reserve diesel fuel are moving. At present, this work is being carried out remotely. But if these issues remain unresolved, we will return to this necessary support for us in our talks with Grossi,” Likhachev said.

According to him, Rosatom is currently awaiting “agreements, including through Vienna, to allow us to deliver diesel fuel and replenish reserve storage tanks without risks and without military threats, in preparation for future incidents.”

Earlier, media reports indicated that the meeting between Russia and the IAEA would be held in Vienna.
