Armenia's chauvinistic frenzy raging amid international community’s double standards

15 April 2023 14:55

Secretary of the Armenian Security Council Armen Grigoryan has once again distinguished himself by deliberately provocative statements addressed to Azerbaijan. In an interview with the Armenian Internet TV Civilnet.am, he stated that Azerbaijan was allegedly launching a military escalation, and cited the recent armed clash near Dygh village as confirmation.

“In general, Azerbaijan is preparing, and this incident occurred in accordance with the logic of the ongoing work. That is, this is part of a plan for a possible escalation by Azerbaijan,” Grigoryan said, adding that the incident on the border in the Lachin district is a challenge to EU observers, that is, Brussels.

"We expect Brussels to take appropriate steps to be sure that Azerbaijan will not use false pretexts, as during the incident with Tegh (Dygh) village to organise a provocation," the secretary of the Armenian Security Council said while addressing Europe.

It is not hard to understand that Armenia is trying to gain EU support in order to shift the blame for the recent armed incident entirely onto Azerbaijan and justify its provocative machinations in the eyes of the international public. Grigoryan's statements about the alleged violation of the previous agreements by Azerbaijan completely fit into the false propaganda of the Armenian authorities about Azerbaijan’s "aggressiveness". It is clear that Armenian politicians’ empty rhetoric about their “unwavering commitment to peace and stability in the region” is mainly designed to the international community’s sympathy and support for the “victim of Azerbaijani aggression”, intensified by the strong ties of the Armenian lobby abroad. The solid international organisations turned a blind eye to Armenia’s war crimes against Azerbaijan for more than 30 years for the financial support received from the Armenians worldwide. However, even now they are unwilling to assess the numerous armed provocations of the Armenians, leading to both human casualties and destruction.

For some reason, Western guardians of humanism do not consider it necessary to condemn Armenia for terror and brutal violence. Armenian users even are not afraid of disseminating video footage showing violence on social networks. Terrible photos and even video footage have appeared on Armenian social networks, demonstrating cruelty towards a captured Azerbaijani soldier. This Azerbaijani soldier did not attack the Armenian military or civilians, but simply by chance ended up on the Armenian territory.

The Armenian side is to blame for the incident because the border has not been delimited yet because of its irreconcilable policy. That is why soldiers often end up on the other side’s territory. In the same way, Armenian servicemen from time to time end up on Azerbaijani territory, but they are always returned back safe and sound, rather than beaten or tortured. They are not subjected to torture and violence, they are provided with food, water and even medical assistance is rendered to them despite hundreds of Azerbaijani citizens, namely, children, women, the elderly, not to mention the military personnel captured during the occupation of our lands, were subjected to brutal torture.

The universal human norms that dictate a humane attitude towards the prisoners of war, and the civilians of the enemy are beyond the Armenian nationalist policy, and the recent atrocities committed against an Azerbaijani soldier testify to this.

This fact also testifies to a malicious violation of the obligations imposed on Armenia as a country that has adopted the Geneva Convention against torture, cruelty, and humiliation of human dignity in relation to prisoners of war.
Therefore, the international community should resolutely condemn this heinous crime, giving a legal assessment of the actions of the Armenian side and demanding the immediate release of the Azerbaijani servicemen.

Firstly, proceeding from the laws of international law, the use of force against an unarmed soldier is a violation of humanitarian law and should be qualified as a war crime.

Secondly, human rights organisations should force the Armenian leadership to conduct an investigation into this incident, as well as allow international observers to see the detained serviceman because medical care should be rendered to him.

The EU has already demanded that the detainees should be treated in accordance with international law. The US has expressed concern about the violence against Azerbaijani citizens, while the UK has declared the inadmissibility of such cruelty. This casts doubt on Grigoryan's ridiculous accusations against Baku.

However, such a well-known international organisation as Human Rights Watch, being a zealous defender of human rights in 100 countries, does not see the atrocities committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan.

This time, despite the indisputable evidence of an inhumane attitude towards Azerbaijani soldiers, Human Rights Watch will likely make just declarative statements that do not even affect Yerevan’s truly fascist policy. The European Parliament does not condemn Armenia either. It is just indifferently watching the savage treatment of Azerbaijani prisoners of war in Armenia.

After the end of the Second Karabakh war, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in May 2021 calling on Azerbaijan to immediately and unconditionally release all Armenian prisoners of war, both military and civilian, detained during and after the conflict.

That is why, feeling such impunity, Armenian figures are generously and fearlessly issuing one statement after another claiming that Azerbaijan is allegedly violating agreements or preparing for a military escalation, counting on the support of the same European Parliament and other international structures promoting only Armenia's interests.
