Azerbaijan Cycling Federation moves to revive prestigious Tour d’Azerbaijan
The Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation held a meeting on June 5 to address important current issues, opening with a speech by federation president Zaur Akhundov.
The event featured an honorary guest, Andy Schleck, the celebrated Luxembourg cyclist and winner of the 2010 Tour de France, who was introduced to those present, Caliber.Az reports, referring to local media.
Sahib Alakbarov, the federation’s first vice president, reviewed progress made since the leadership transition.
He noted that meetings were conducted with coaches and athletes to gather their input, and a comprehensive document was prepared outlining the federation’s strategic priorities for 2025 to 2028.
Alakbarov also revealed that discussions with the International Cycling Union (UCI) led to a preliminary agreement to reinstate the Tour d’Azerbaijan, a race that had previously earned broad international acclaim.
The federation has already submitted an application to have the five-stage race included in the UCI calendar for 2026.
At the meeting, the committee approved the federation’s strategic plans for 2025–2028, along with a new logo, updated staffing structure, and the design of the national team’s uniform.
