Azerbaijan’s Mahir Mammadov secures third term as FIDE vice president

President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation Mahir Mammadov has been elected vice president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for a third term, with his new mandate running for four years.

The election took place during the FIDE Congress in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, held on the sidelines of the 46th World Chess Olympiad.

The elections for FIDE’s key leadership positions were held as part of the General Assembly, with delegates voting for the organization’s president, four vice presidents and other members of its leadership.

The process began on September 26 with the election of a new FIDE president, which was decided in the second round of voting. Timur Turlov, president of the Chess Federation of Kazakhstan, secured 110 votes against 85 for his opponent, after receiving the support of 96 delegates in the first round.

The 38-year-old Turlov became the eighth president of FIDE, succeeding Arkady Dvorkovich, who headed the organization from 2018 to 2026. He was elected to a four-year term.

The General Assembly continued in Samarkand on September 27, when the remaining elections and appointments to FIDE’s leadership were completed, including the election of Mammadov to another four-year term as vice president.

Mammadov first assumed the position in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022, making his latest election his third term in FIDE’s leadership.
