Russell сalls Baku F1 qualifying margin biggest of his career

Mercedes driver George Russell said qualifying for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix had gone exceptionally well after he secured pole position in Baku.

“There are some difficulties with car handling on the Baku track. But overall, the laps were good. Qualifying went excellently for me,” Russell said, according to Report news agency.

Russell finished more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of his closest rivals, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri, describing the margin as the largest of his racing career.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, Russell said he was confident about Mercedes’ chances but warned that Max Verstappen remained a strong contender.

“I feel confident, but Max Verstappen is also very fast. I think we have a good chance to fight for the win, but this is Baku, and anything can happen,” he said.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will conclude on September 26.
