Azerbaijan expands its space horizons with three new international agreements

25 April 2025 10:14

The Space Agency under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan ("Azercosmos") has signed three additional Memoranda of Understanding during the ongoing Space Technologies Conference in Baku.

Azercosmos's press service told local media that one of the memoranda was signed with Hungary’s leading technology company, 4iG Space and Defence Technologies (4iG S&D), per Caliber.Az.

The agreement outlines cooperation in the manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing (MAIT) of small satellites; joint Earth observation data projects; pooling of expertise and resources; leveraging Azercosmos’ experience in satellite operations and communications by companies within the 4iG S&D portfolio; exploring Azerbaijan’s participation in European, including Hungarian, space programs; potential cooperation with the European Space Agency’s Business Incubation Centre; and support for initiatives that drive technological development, innovation, and knowledge exchange in the space sector. The agreement also includes joint projects in space education and training professionals through the Azercosmos Space Academy, as well as collaboration with domestic and international partners to promote innovation and strengthen both countries' roles in the space economy.

The second memorandum was signed with Uzbekistan’s "Uz-Sat." This document provides for cooperation in the exchange of experience and knowledge in space technologies and sciences, sharing information and evaluating potential areas of cooperation, and establishing a strategic partnership. Overall, the memorandum is expected to further expand collaboration between Azercosmos and Uz-Sat, enhance both countries’ potential in the space sector, broaden participation in international space initiatives, and contribute significantly to their scientific and technological advancement.

The third memorandum was signed with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK). The agreement aims to expand scientific and technical cooperation in satellite technologies. Under this collaboration, the two sides will exchange knowledge and resources in satellite development, Earth observation, and the use of satellite imagery.

According to the memorandum, Azercosmos will provide satellite imagery, while TÜBİTAK will share its expertise in space technologies. Both parties also intend to collaborate on international space initiatives, particularly those related to Turkic states, and implement innovative projects. This cooperation marks a new phase in the scientific and technological partnership between Azerbaijan and Türkiye and is expected to contribute significantly to the development of regional space initiatives.
