Baku discussions focus on French control over Mayotte Island and its implications
A conference titled "The Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island, Comoros Union" is taking place in Baku with support from the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
The conference focuses on Mayotte Island, which is currently under French administration, Caliber.Az informs citing local media.
Attendees include public and political figures, academics, human rights advocates, leaders of NGOs, and members of political parties from the Comoros Union, including Mayotte Island, who are campaigning against French control and advocating for the island's return to the Comoros Union. Diplomats accredited in Azerbaijan are also participating.
The discussions will cover the history of French colonialism in the Comoros, the impact of France’s occupation of Mayotte on the Comorian people, France's geopolitical and economic interests in the region, and the stance of international organizations on the issue of Mayotte Island.
This marks the 16th international event hosted by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) in the past year, all aimed at supporting people resisting colonial policies in accordance with international law.
