Azerbaijan manages to liberate territory it lost in early 1990s UK’s Foreign Secretary says
UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy has published an article examining key issues in international relations.
In his article, he highlights the necessity of moving beyond the legacy of imperialism, condemns actions that undermine the sovereignty of nations, and draws parallels with contemporary conflicts, Caliber.Az reports, citing the article.
Lammy emphasises that in the 21st century, all countries, regardless of their size or geopolitical standing, must have the right to chart their own course and develop their foreign policy strategies.
"I know all too well from my own experience how difficult some in Britain have found it to come to terms with its colonial past. But I remain proud to represent a country which is trying to do so. A country where someone with my background is Foreign Secretary. A country where they can open conversations about the legacy of such a history," Lammy wrote.
In his article, Lammy explores global events and historical struggles for independence. A central theme is the need to reject outdated imperialist approaches and focus on modern pathways for cooperation between nations.
He specifically mentions Azerbaijan, noting that the country has successfully reclaimed its territories.
“Azerbaijan has been able to liberate territory it lost in the early 1990s,” he wrote.
“The states of Central Asia look increasingly east and south. Georgia and Moldova are engaging with NATO and EU,” the foreign secretary stressed.
UK’s Foreign Secretary and a member of the Labour Party David Lammy is a politician with educational credentials from Harvard Law School and the London School of Economics. He has represented the Tottenham constituency since 2000, having been elected at the age of 27 as one of the youngest MPs in the House of Commons. Lammy became Foreign Secretary in July 2024 following the Labour Party's victory under Keir Starmer.
