Biden warns of "tough winter" ahead, calls on allies to stand firm with Ukraine
On October 18, US President Joe Biden called on NATO allies to continue their support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia during a farewell visit to Germany, occurring just weeks ahead of the presidential elections.
The remarks were broadcast on the White House's official website, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Speaking at an event in Germany, he stated, "We're headed into a very difficult winter. We cannot let up."
As Ukraine braces for a third winter of conflict and ongoing losses in the east, Kyiv and its allies are concerned that a potential return of Donald Trump to the White House could result in diminished US military assistance.
President Biden emphasised that Western allies must "maintain our support (...) until Ukraine achieves a fair and sustainable peace. We are entering a challenging winter, and we cannot afford to relent."
Biden reaffirmed his commitment to continue supporting Kyiv until a "just and lasting peace" is achieved.
Biden met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after which they were scheduled to participate in four-way discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Notably, on October 17, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled his "victory plan" to the European Union and NATO; however, his allies did not concur with his request for immediate NATO membership.
