Obama duo join forces with Harris to boost voter turnout as election day approaches

18 October 2024 20:39

Vice President Kamala Harris will take to the campaign trail alongside Barack and Michelle Obama, two of the Democratic Party’s most popular figures, as they aim to mobilise voters in key swing states with the election just under 20 days away.

Former President Obama is set to join Harris in Georgia on October 24, while the former First Lady will accompany her in Michigan on October 26, as confirmed by a senior campaign official who spoke on the condition of anonymity regarding the forthcoming events, Caliber.Az reports per Bloomberg.

These two get-out-the-vote rallies will mark the first time Harris has campaigned with either of the Obamas during this election cycle, and it will also be Michelle Obama’s first visit to battleground states for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

The former president previously campaigned for Harris in Pittsburgh, where he aimed to strengthen her support among Black male voters — an audience the Trump campaign has actively targeted — especially given concerns about the economy that have led to a decline in backing for the Democratic ticket.

However, Obama’s comments suggesting that some Black men were “coming up with reasons and excuses” to avoid supporting Harris due to her gender received backlash. Harris is striving to make history as the first Black woman president in the United States, following Barack Obama’s landmark presidency as the first Black commander-in-chief.

Notably, Obama, regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party, is expected to play a pivotal role in energizing the voter base. His appearance follows a highly praised speech at the Democratic National Convention in August, where he positioned Harris as a forward-thinking leader and the natural successor to his diverse political coalition aimed at mobilizing youth voters.

With the election just weeks away, both campaigns are intensifying their efforts to secure key states, as the outcome hangs in the balance.
