China urges US to reconsider "Golden Dome" defense system citing Space Treaty violation
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has said that China sharply criticised the US development of the "Golden Dome" missile defence system, urging Washington to reconsider the project, which it believes violates the principles of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
She expressed concerns that the project threatens strategic stability and could contribute to the militarisation of space, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The Chinese government argues that the system, which would significantly expand US military capabilities in space, could lead to increased tensions and instability on a global scale.
"We urge the US to abandon its development and deployment of a global missile defense system and take concrete steps to enhance strategic mutual trust among major powers and safeguard global strategic stability," Mao said.
The "Golden Dome" system, which includes plans for the deployment of space-based interception technologies, is viewed by Beijing as a major escalation in the arms race in outer space. Chinese officials argue that the project has clear offensive potential, which is contrary to the principles of the Outer Space Treaty, which mandates the peaceful use of space.
