Egypt, UAE, and Morocco decline to offer peacekeeping support for Palestine

14 August 2024 17:49

Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco have decided against deploying military forces to the Gaza Strip for a peacekeeping mission once the conflict subsides.

The UAE is open to sending troops but only if specifically requested by the Palestinian Authority, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Negotiations concerning Gaza are set to take place in Qatar on August 15, 2024, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing that the Israeli delegation will be led by the head of the Mossad.

Palestine is seeking support from Russia, a sentiment echoed by President Mahmoud Abbas during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The recent escalation began with a significant and deadly assault by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Militants from Hamas infiltrated Israeli territory from Gaza, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and the capture of over 240 hostages. Hamas claimed the attack was in retaliation for alleged Israeli aggression at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

In response, Israel imposed a total blockade on the Gaza Strip, home to around 2.3 million Palestinians, severely restricting access to essential resources and worsening the humanitarian crisis. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted extensive airstrikes in Gaza and have targeted sites in Lebanon and Syria due to perceived threats. The conflict has expanded, with violence reported in the West Bank, further intensifying regional tensions.
