Fire aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower injures three sailors
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) suffered a small fire on April 14 while undergoing maintenance at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, according to U.S. Navy officials.
A Navy spokesperson confirmed that the blaze broke out onboard the carrier earlier this week but was quickly contained and extinguished by the ship’s crew and shipyard personnel, USNI News reports.
Three sailors sustained injuries in the incident. They were treated by the ship’s medical team and have since returned to full duty, the spokesperson said.
The carrier has been docked at the Virginia-based naval facility for approximately 16 months, having arrived on January 8, 2025, for a scheduled post-deployment maintenance period following its 2023–2024 mission with the United States Fifth Fleet.
The planned maintenance includes extensive work on propulsion systems, crew living conditions, combat systems, and aviation support capabilities. It remains unclear whether the fire will delay the vessel’s maintenance schedule.
