French foreign minister warns of increased risk of war in Europe
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has raised alarm over the heightened risk of war in Europe, emphasizing that the threat has never been as pronounced in nearly 15 years.
Barrot warned that the front line is "getting closer" and that the danger of conflict within the European Union is growing by the day, Caliber.Az reports citing French media.
"Never has the risk of a war in Europe, in the European Union been so high ... the threat keeps getting closer to us, the front line keeps getting closer to us," he told France Inter radio, a day after European leaders rallied around Ukraine at a summit in London.
Barrot's comments come in the context of rising tensions over the ongoing war in Ukraine, with European security increasingly under scrutiny. He echoed French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for stronger European defences to "contain the threat" posed by external aggressions.
In addition, Barrot described a recent meeting of European leaders on Ukraine, held in London, as a crucial moment of realization. "It was an awakening for many Europeans who had previously refused to acknowledge the reality of the situation," he said, referencing the growing consensus among European leaders about the urgency of addressing the security challenges posed by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The French Foreign Minister's remarks underline the increasing concerns within Europe about regional stability and the need for collective defence measures to counter the escalating threats from both within and outside the continent.
