German chancellor names condition for Ukraine's admission to EU
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Ukraine will be able to become part of the European Union (EU) when it meets the admission criteria.
Ukraine is already part of the European family, and Berlin intends to support Kyiv in the EU accession process, he said in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper.
"It is obvious to everyone that admission to the EU can take place only after meeting all the criteria," the chancellor noted.
Scholz added that for its part, the EU must also complete a number of tasks to be able to accept new members.
The German chancellor said that he discussed the future of Ukraine after the end of the armed conflict with Ukrainian politicians and allies. One of the topics is to ensure the country's security.
Scholz is also convinced that "we must prepare to help Ukraine defend itself for a long time to come”.
