Trump signals 80% cut to China tariffs, urges Beijing to open markets
US President Donald Trump has indicated a possible reduction of import tariffs on China by up to 80%. He made the statement in a post on Truth Social.
According to Trump, reducing "tariffs on China by up to 80% seems right", per Caliber.Az.
In a separate post, the President expressed the view that "China should open its markets to the US," adding that doing so "would be very good" for Beijing. This comes after Trump previously stated that the US might eventually reduce tariffs on Chinese goods.
On April 2, Trump announced the imposition of import tariffs on products from 185 countries and territories. Russia was not included on the list. Universal tariffs of 10% took effect on April 5, while country-specific tariffs began on April 9. Trump later said he would suspend for 90 days the application of additional reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries and territories. The White House explained that the pause is related to ongoing trade negotiations. During this period, a flat 10% tariff remains in place.
At the same time, the administration raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%. Previously, a 20% tariff was introduced against Canada, China, and Mexico over what Washington described as insufficient efforts to combat fentanyl smuggling into the US. As a result, total US tariffs on Chinese goods currently amount to 145%.
Meanwhile, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng is scheduled to visit Switzerland from May 9 to 12, where he will hold consultations with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
