Germany announces deliveries for Ukraine 100 tanks from Greece, Slovakia
As CNN reports, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht while visiting German troops deployed in Lithuania, said that NATO needs to work on strengthening its defence.
“We live in serious times, and in such times, it is also important to know where we have gaps in the defence. The air defence is one such area where it is urgent to act,” Lambrecht said while visiting German troops deployed in Lithuania.
Facing an increased security threat, Germany will also create a new armoured infantry brigade that could be quickly deployed to Lithuania in times of need, Lambrecht added.
Besides, she announced new deliveries of weapons to Ukraine, in particular, IRIS-T air defence systems and 100 tanks from Greece and Slovakia.
Greece, which, along with its NATO allies, has sided with Ukraine in the war with Russia, announced in September it would send an additional forty of its Soviet-built BMP-1 IFVs to Ukraine.
The announcement was made after Athens reached a deal with Germany according to which it would receive the same number of the more modern forty Marder IFVs from Berlin.
The agreement between Greek National Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos and his German counterpart Christine Lambrecht follows the decision of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to support Ukraine’s defence against Russia’s continued aggression.
