Germany signals readiness to expand Ukraine support, troop decision still pending
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that any decision on deploying German troops to Ukraine will be contingent on US involvement and the consent of the German parliament.
His remarks came during a virtual summit of the "Coalition of the Willing" held on September 4, where allied leaders discussed long-term security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a negotiated resolution to the conflict with Russia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
According to Merz’s spokesperson, Stefan Kornelius, the chancellor underscored Germany’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly in non-combat areas such as funding, equipping, and training.
“The focus must be on financing, arming, and training the Ukrainian armed forces. Germany has become Kyiv's most important partner in this area. The German government is prepared to expand this,” Merz told his counterparts.
While affirming Berlin’s willingness to enhance its support, the chancellor was clear that a decision on any direct military engagement would come only after key conditions are met.
“Germany will decide on military involvement in due course, once the framework conditions have been clarified. This concerns, among other things, the nature and scope of any US involvement and the outcome of a negotiation process. The German parliament will decide on a national mandate,” Merz added.
Germany has emerged as one of Ukraine’s principal backers in Europe, providing extensive military aid and logistical support since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
