Honduran opposition lawmaker struck by explosive device at Congress PHOTO/VIDEO
Gladys Aurora López, a member of the opposition National Party in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), was injured on January 8 after being struck by an explosive device as she was about to enter the National Congress.
The attack occurred amid heightened political tensions, as members of the nationalist bloc and Parlacen deputies gathered following a call by Congress President Luis Redondo to vote on a motion to recount votes from the general elections. Despite a strong police and military presence, disturbances broke out minutes earlier on the lower levels of the Congress building, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

According to reports, López was giving an interview when the explosive device hit her in the back and neck. She was immediately assisted by others inside the Congress and was described as somewhat stable, though she sustained multiple injuries, including to her ear.

Congress President Luis Redondo condemned the attack and announced an investigation.
“We strongly condemn the act of violence that occurred in the National Congress, which has endangered the safety of individuals and directly affected our fellow congresswoman Gladys Aurora López… No act of violence will be tolerated within the legislative building or against any member of the Legislative Branch," he said.
Tomás Zambrano, head of the National Party’s congressional bloc, directly blamed Congress President Redondo and former president Manuel “Mel” Zelaya for the attack.
He further accused the ruling party of fostering violence against the opposition, stating: “These acts of violence have been perpetrated against the opposition for four years. They cannot continue abusing their power.”
