Hungarian minister calls for UN mechanism to oversee weapons in Ukraine
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has urged the UN to establish a mechanism to monitor the vast volumes of weaponry that have been accumulated in Ukraine since the conflict began.
“In the last 3 years, hundreds of billions of euros have been poured weapons into Ukraine. The fate of these weapons can be considered to be at least uncertain. We don't want to live with the risk of massive weapons being piled up in our immediate neighborhood uncontrolled. That is why we expect the UN to launch a mechanism that will enable us to settle the fate of the huge amount of weapons sent to Ukraine after the war is over. Today's hearing was reassuring with Izumi Nakamitsu, the Deputy Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs of the UN,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the minister’s message on Facebook.
Earlier, Szijjártó expressed hope that ongoing negotiations between Russia and the US will pave the way for an agreement that could form the foundation of a new global security system.
“It is clear that good US-Russia relations could serve as the cornerstone for global peace,” the minister stated.
He also voiced optimism that the resumption of dialogue between the two major powers could bring about changes in arms control, potentially contributing to greater global stability.
