Hungary, Switzerland advocate for diplomatic resolution to Ukraine conflict

05 May 2025 21:56

Hungary and Switzerland have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the success of peace negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Both nations are convinced that the war can only be settled through diplomatic efforts, with the active participation of all parties involved, including the USA and Russia, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

This position was emphasized by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó following his meeting with Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis in Bern. Szijjártó stressed that military solutions would not bring an end to the war, and only meaningful negotiations—where all opposing sides are represented—could lead to a resolution.

"It is clear to both of us that no solution can be found on the battlefield. Only negotiations can put an end to the war, and only such negotiations can make sense where all opposing sides are represented," Szijjártó remarked.

The Hungarian minister further emphasized that Hungary and Switzerland remain steadfast in their support for peace talks, urging that an agreement must be reached to end the conflict. “This is why we Hungarians and Swiss continue to advocate that the peace talks are successful, that an agreement is reached, and the war finally ends,” he stated.

In addition, Szijjártó and Cassis expressed strong opposition to the politicisation of international organizations, arguing that such actions hinder peace efforts. Szijjártó remarked that, "In large international organisations, it should be possible even for countries that disagree or are hostile to each other to discuss problems with each other. If we politicise the work of international organisations, we practically give up the possibility of peace."
